Responsible and Ethical Breeding Practices

Breeding and raising German Shepherd Dogs is a life changing responsibility. It is not always fun, nor is it something that people should want to do just so their children can be involved in watching new lives come into the world.  It is sometimes frustrating and heartbreaking. Sometimes there are wonderful things that happen!  You do not make money raising German Shepherds.  If done correctly, you do good if you break even!
A good breeder will do health checks, xrays, temperament testing, training and socializing with their breeding stock.  A good breeder will have a full written contract and guarantee against genetic defects and diseases, which protects both the buyer and the seller.  An ethical breeder will always take their dogs back if they need to be rehomed and will be responsible for the life of any dogs that they produce.
A responsible breeder will always try to breed as close to the written standard as they possibly can.
A responsible breeder will never breed a dog who is aggressive, untrustworthy around children or who is a liability, as they know that whatever temperament the sire and dam have, is what is thrown in their offspring!  A good breeder is concerned about what type of home that their puppies will be going to, will question the potential buyer and make sure that they understand what living with and training a German Shepherd Dog is all about.  They will want the dog to live in the house with the family, be a huge part of the families life and be well socialized and trained in order to be a good member of the community. A responsible breeder of German Shepherd Dogs will make sure that their breeding stock retains and improves the working ability in their lines.  We all want a beautiful dog, but if the German Shepherd cannot do the work asked of it, it is NOT a German Shepherd!  Our breed is a working breed, not just a beautiful dog who gaits around the show ring!
A responsible breeder temperament test their puppies and provides a copy of the testing results to their buyers.  A responsible breeder sells pets on a limited registration and a spay/neuter contract, their potential working/breeding/show stock are few in each litter and only those are sold with a full registration.
An ethical breeder wants to make sure that each and every dog that they produce has a full, happy and healthy life.  They also want to make sure that every customers is as happy with that dog as the dog is with the people.  Unhappy shepherds and unhappy owner equals a very unhappy breeder! We love our dogs and do everything we can to bring happiness, pleasure and service to all involved!  We have become wonderful friends with many of our customers and keep in close contact with them.
We are proud to be an ethical and responsible breeder!
We take all of this very seriously

We began Knighten Haus in April of 1996 with the purchase of our first
AKC registered German Shepherd Dog,
Loving Heart v Knighten Haus.  We had searched many kennels and many breeders and had finally found what we had been looking for.  We had listened to the 'German' German Shepherd Breeders and to the 'American' German Shepherd Breeders.  We had studied the GSD breed as a whole for many years learning what the true temperament of a working dog should be.  Obviously, a German Shepherd IS a working dog and is high in energy, very watchful, inquisitive and confident.  A good breeding prospect should show no gun shyness or sound sensitivities, curiosity when approaching a novel object and absolutely no shyness around people.  We found all of this in our first girl, Lovey, who is carried on now in her great great grandchildren.
We encourage everyone who is considering purchasing a German Shepherd to ask us as many questions as they can think of.  We are upfront, honest and proud of our breeding program.  You will find a few show dogs here at our home, but you will find even more working ability, top temperament and good prey drives in our dogs.  We love to show occasionally, but it is a fun thing not a huge competition to see who has the 'prettiest' dog, we are more proud that the dogs that we show have the temperament to stand up to an intruder and protect their families.

Knighten Haus has
been dedicated to producing genetically sound German Shepherds who are an asset to the breed, high drive, high trainability, steady and sure nerves and keen  intelligence. Our dogs are working as certified therapy dogs, in agility, obedience, schutzhund, personal protection, herding, working police k9's (Bomb and Narcotics Detection)  and most of all as loving family companions.
All of our dogs are raised with our family of  four children from the day they are born.  We feel it is extremely important that our children be involved  with the care and socialization of our puppies and dogs. The dogs in our lines adore children and are very stable with any kids. .  Our dogs know the difference between a rowdy child and an aggressive stranger.
This is the type of dogs we strive to produce.
A stable and confident dog who is an asset to the community.
